The Elementary School Nurse provides healthcare to scholars, performs health screenings, coordinates referrals to private healthcare providers, and serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, and community healthcare providers to ensure a healthy school environment. The school nurse will also help manage health plans for scholars with chronic health conditions and disabilities, providing necessary care and intervention.
Key Responsibilities:
Health Services
- Provide direct healthcare to scholars.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by healthcare providers.
- Conduct or coordinate health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.) and maintain accurate records.
- Respond to emergencies and provide first aid and emergency care as needed.
- Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans for scholars with special health needs.
Health Education
- Educate students, staff, and families on health and wellness topics.
- Develop health education programs and materials.
- Provide training for staff on health-related issues, including chronic illness management, infection control, and emergency procedures.
Health Environment
- Promote a healthy school environment through disease prevention, health promotion, and safety initiatives.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal health regulations and school policies.
- Identify health and safety concerns in the school environment and recommend corrective action.
Collaboration and Communication
- Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community healthcare providers.
- Collaborate with school staff to develop strategies and plans for addressing the health and safety needs of students.
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding their child’s health needs and concerns.
- Maintain confidentiality of student health information in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.
Record Keeping and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records for all students.
- Prepare and submit reports as required by the school administration and health authorities.
- Document care provided and any changes in students' health status.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN) with relevant experience.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Nebraska
- Certification in school nursing (preferred).
Experience:
- Previous experience in pediatric or school nursing preferred.
- Knowledge of child growth and development, health education, and public health principles.
Skills:
- Excellent clinical and assessment skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in using electronic health records and basic office software.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a school environment with frequent interaction with students, staff, and parents.
