July 18 has always been a special day for Nelson Mandela Elementary because it is the birthday of the school’s namesake, Nelson Mandela. In years past, the school has celebrated this day with Mandela Fest, a large community celebration in Miller Park. COVID-19 caused some plans to change, but it’s still a special day. Nelson Mandela’s birthday seemed the perfect fit for the school’s first ever graduating class.
The scholars and their families braved the heat to safely witness the ceremony outside at Miller Park. The scholars heard reflections from the school board, their teachers, and their fellow peers before finally receiving their diplomas.
Nelson Mandela is proud to send off their first class off to middle school, and the team looks forward to their success. At the same time, the school is preparing for a safe start back to school for the incoming scholars in August.
