Mandela families continue to prove that despite the pandemic, they can achieve amazing things when they work together. Last month, members of the Scholar Leadership Council (3rd, 4th, and 5th graders) organized a food drive for the Food Bank for the Heartland after noticing that food insecurity is a real issue right now, especially during the pandemic.
The drive lasted for one week, and classes were given the incentive of a pizza party if they brought the most items. In total, Mandela families gathered 13,745 items. Enrollment at Mandela is 230 scholars; that means, that if each scholar donated the same number of items, they would have brought about 60 items each.
The Mandela Mantra is: “Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world. I will change the world with my hope, strength, service, unity, peace, and wisdom.” Team members at Mandela strive to incorporate each of those values into every lesson they teach. The food drive was a wonderful way to bring the Mandela families together to support their own community and teach the scholars about the importance of one of those values, service.
